A.SE.D works across the Great Lakes Region — in Rwanda and the DRC — with governments, districts and development partners. We build the capacity of the communities themselves, so the water points, the classrooms and the livelihoods outlast the programme that paid for them.

Why it matters
A latrine that is actually used. A rainwater tank still holding water in the dry season. A cooperative still trading after the grant is spent. That is the development we exist to build — the kind that stays when we are gone.
01 · What we do
Four areas of work, nine founding objectives
The objectives in the A.SE.D constitution group into four areas we deliver in. Each one is practical work with a community, an institution or a district, not a policy paper.
Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction
Helping households build an income that lasts after a programme closes, and training people to design and run the projects that produce it.
Local Government and Institutional Capacity
Making decentralised entities and partner organisations more operational, so delivery continues without us.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
The area with the longest record: national sanitation campaigns, rainwater harvesting, and facilities built and used in three provinces.
Public Health and Environment
Prevention work carried out face to face, on the health and safety risks communities raise most often.
In the DRC, this work is delivered through an integrated Education in Emergencies approach — four pillars that keep children, and especially girls, in school.
